How to stop being lazy with school work
We become lazy when we are not motivated enough to want to do something.
This causes us to lack the energy to do productive things, and we then start doing unproductive things like spending too much time on Tik Tok, Instagram, or YouTube to keep us entertained and amused.
You should now take a piece of paper and write down at least 10 things that are stopping you from studying.
Be honest with yourself, and the list can include things like “I hate studying because it is too stressful and boring”.
You should also write down the top 5 things that are making you even more lazy, and the answers can include what do you do when you don’t study – like being on WhatsApp with friends, walking around the malls, daydreaming.
These two activities will help you know what your problems really are.
Without knowing the actual causes of your laziness, it is not possible to solve the issues and patterns that are preventing you from being more enthusiastic about a task that you are dreading.
We understand, you feel as though you are unable to overcome your laziness and reluctance because on some days, it feels so difficult to interrupt your pattern of never wanting to do your homework or revise for your exams.
Let’s start with some practical and easy steps to help you, so that you can stop being lazy with school work.
- Sleep Well. When you are not sleeping well, or sleeping late, or are sleeping too much (eg more than 10 hours every night), this will affect your mood and interest in paying attention in class, as well as when you need to study at home
- Wash Your Face With Cold Water. Each time you feel lazy or want to doze off, walk to your bathroom and wash your face. Even better, take a shower. These actions are very soothing, and your brain and body will thank you for these
- Mental Distractions. When your mind wanders around, keep a sheet of paper nearby. Each time something distracts you, write down what that thought is – and tell yourself that these lists are “things to think about some day”. Meaning you WILL think about them more, but not now, not today. Then guide your mind back to what you need to do for your homework, or preparation for your tests or exams
- Write Notes. When all that you do is read, it might make you feel bored and sleepy. During your reading, once you come across any key points, write them down in your notebook. This makes it much easier for you to remember this important information for a longer time
- Positive Thinking. Don’t study thinking that you might fail, even if there might be a chance that you might get weak grades. Understand the content, and study to finish chapter after chapter, topic after topic
- Move Around More. Try to do simple exercises that you enjoy, for 5 minutes. Twenty minutes is better, but really, any amount of movement is better than just sitting around and allowing yourself to drift off into a semi-nap. More oxygen will reach your brain when you are physically active, and this helps you to remember important information. And studying will be less frustrating
- Drink Water. The most underrated way of getting motivated and feeling more energy is actually drinking water. Plain water cleans toxins from your body, and is very good for your metabolism. Try to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day – more, if you are exercising. Keep a bottle or glass of water near you, and drink a lot – especially when your mind wanders or you feel bored
- Watch What You Eat. Your diet is an important source of energy, and can also motivate you. Plant-based, high fibre is best. Foods that are high in protein (meat, tofu) are also excellent. For one week, reduce junk food by 75%, and you can see and feel the difference in your mood and mental health. Avoid eating a heavy meal right before studying, because you will feel tired and sleepy
- Your Attitude Matters. Before going to sleep, write a note to yourself on your phone or on a piece of paper: “I am … (motivated and energized to focus on my studies)”. You can edit it as you wish – for example: be more popular among my friends, do better at my hobbies, have a better relationship with my family. This method works very well, because the messages goes into your subconscious mind, which controls as much as 95% of our lives, so give it a try for just 10 days and you will thank yourself for starting this
- Make Small Goals. When your objectives are achievable, the task will not seem so intimidating. You might want to tell yourself that you will start with the easiest part of the chapter first, and that once you can remember and understand that content, you will move on to the more difficult parts
- Fast Read. Before you start “seriously” revising and memorizing content, you should first acclimatize your mind to what you are about to study by getting a good overview of what you need to understand. This helps your brain prepare for the work that you are about to do. After you have done this, you should read the content slowly, so that you are able to focus and understand what is being taught to you. These steps help the top students when they need to remember important concepts and content. Avoid starting with the most complex topic, because that might cause you to feel overwhelmed and discouraged
- Sit On A Chair. Do not study on your bed (you are bound to feel sleepy there), make sure that your table is clean and uncluttered, and ensure that your backbone is straight. Posture helps a lot, because you can avoid having tense muscles – which will then stress you out further – when you sit, stand and rest properly
- Take Short Breaks. For every 20 to 25 minutes that you are studying, take a short mental/physical break of 5 minutes. This helps reset and refresh your mind, so that you are more ready to absorb even more content after your break ends
- Why Are You Doing This? Every day, remind yourself why you are doing this. Everyone would prefer to be on social media, listen to music, hang out with friends. When you have a purpose in life, you know that one of the ways to reach that goal is by doing well – or at least adequately completing – your formal studies. This is the most powerful way to motivate yourself – when you realize and acknowledge what your purpose and goals are. When you have a good idea of what your passion is, what you love to do, you know that getting your homework and exams out of the way will clear the path for you to then work on your hobbies and interests
- Do Not Study Under Pressure. Study for improve your life, for your future, for your career, for your goals. Studying is the quickest and most effective way to achieve success
- Reward Yourself. Eat a sweet piece of fruit, spend a few minutes on social media, or chat with your friends. You need to know that all the work that you had put in will help you be a better person, and the reward will make you feel happier and fulfilled
